Abhayadatta

"MASTERS OF MAHAMUDRA"

SONGS AND HISTORIES OF THE EIGHTY-FOUR BUDDHIST SIDDHAS

Stories of 84 great siddhas or mahasiddhas, who lived between III and XII centuries, are covered in this book. Siddha means “the one who obtained powers (sidhi)” or “having reached the purpose” .The best known siddhas Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, Krishnacharya, Tilopa, Naropa, Shantideva are known as masters of Buddhism and founders of the great Tibetan tantric traditions.
When you read the translated episodes of lives of siddhas in this book, they seem as legends at first sight, because people stopped to believe in miracles overpowered by materialism. A lot of scholars of Asian studies claim these portraits are legends. The author in his introduction highlights that the stories are real. No matter the way you look at siddhi magic, either symbolic or real, it liberates from limits and reveals huge possibilities of the man and shows how much depend on belief in Dharma, harmony – the primordial Divine Light of the consciousness.
The essence of these ancient stories as well as of the whole Tantra is transformation of all negative emotions while using them for spiritual improvement.
Siddhas were ordinary people at first. They received teachings corresponding to their nature and interests, practiced and reached the purpose: became the Divine Light – realized the divine nature.
If they could, then maybe everybody can?..
