Among the Trikula Natha, the Lords of the Three Families, who are the principal great Bodhisattva deisciples of the Buddha, namely, Manjushri, Vajrapani, and Avalokiteshvara, it is the former who principally represents and embodies the activity of wisdom. He is the patron of all learning and scholarship, especially of the science of astrology, and his consort Sarasvati is the patroness of poetry, art, and music, as well as eloquence of speech. Manjushri is usually depicted as a golden youth bearing the sword of wisdom that cuts through ignorance and delusion and with the scriptural text of the Perfection of Wisdom. In this peaceful guise, he is universally invoked to increase in the individual the powers of memory, intelligence, and quickness of wit in debate...
